A voodoo restaurant opened in Miami in the 1990s and became a go-to for locals looking for an affordable, delicious meal.
The food was made to order, but the atmosphere was so inviting, the staff could feel at home.
“We were all so comfortable,” said owner John Hines, who would go on to own a number of restaurants, including his own in South Beach.
“The people at the table were so sweet and the staff was so nice.”
And so, the restaurant started getting rave reviews.
“When we opened it was such a hit,” said Hines.
“You could just tell that the people were so happy.
It was a good place to hang out.”
It was, and is, an amazing place to enjoy a meal at, but it wasn’t without its flaws.
While the restaurant was known for its wings and fried chicken, the food was often served with a sour cream sauce that was too sweet for many.
It also took a long time to prepare and sometimes was a bit understaffed.
The restaurant was also notoriously slow and didn’t serve enough food, and the waitstaff often seemed a little out of it.
The best way to enjoy the food at Voodoo One is to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere.
Located in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood district, the dining room is adorned with art and murals, including an artwork depicting a voodoo doll with a hand in her mouth.
“This is my voodoo house,” Hines said, pointing to a mural on the wall.
“I was so happy when I first opened the place.
It’s a beautiful place.
I was so excited.”
A couple of the menu items included a salad, which was served with cornbread and mayonnaise.
“They do great wings, but they also do the V-Pork and a variety of other things,” Hine said.
“Some of them are really good, but there are some things that I’d say that are not really good.”
At the time, the price for a meal was $11.95, and Hines had to ask for extra money because the wings were only available for a limited time.
But it didn’t take long for the food to change.
The dining room had a lively atmosphere and a welcoming staff that was just as good.
“It’s a great place to go and have a good time,” Hynes said.
When Hines opened the restaurant in the early 2000s, he was surprised to find that customers would wait outside the restaurant to get a table.
But the wait staff did their best to make it as comfortable as possible, with plenty of napkins and paper towels.
“Every once in a while, there’d be people outside waiting for a table, but most of the time they were just looking at the food,” Hinks said.
In addition to its unique style, the Voo-Voo is a popular spot for locals to eat.
“Everyone goes here to have a meal,” Hins said.
He’s now hoping to open a second restaurant in South Florida.
“There’s not many places in the area that have that much history,” Hinas said.
